When lightning strikes a building oradjacent ground, the instantaneous current can reach magnitudes ranging fromtens of kiloamperes to hundreds of kiloamperes. This large current pulsethreatens outdoor distribution boxes via two primary pathways:
1.Direct lightning strike: Lightning directly impacts the distribution box or the connected cables. While the probability of this scenario is low, once it occurs, the internal equipment of the distribution box is almost completely destroyed instantaneously.
2.Induced lightning strike and power grid surge: A far more common scenario occurs when lightning strikes a distant power line or communication cable, generating an overvoltage that propagates along the conductor to the distribution box; alternatively, a lightning strike to adjacent ground induces overvoltage on the incoming and outgoing cables of the distribution box via intense electromagnetic pulses. This "indirectly transmitted" surge voltage can reach several thousand volts, which far exceeds the withstand voltage of conventional electronic components, breaking through circuit boards and burning out power modules instantaneously.
In application scenarios including outdoor security monitoring distribution boxes, charging station distribution boxes, and communication base station distribution boxes, the internal equipment has high asset value and strict requirements for continuous power supply. Therefore, lightning protection is not an optional auxiliary function, but amandatory design requirement.
The stainless steel distribution box serves as acritical link in lightning protection and grounding systems, with its core components detailed as follows:

1.Grounding Copper Bar: The Convergence Junction for All Protective Grounding Wires
The grounding copper bar mounted inside the distribution box is the core of the box's complete grounding system. The dedicated grounding wire of the lightning arrester, the grounding wire of the box enclosure, and the protective grounding wires of all connected equipment all converge at this junction, before being connected to the grounding network via the main grounding wire. This copper bar is fabricated from brass, which offers excellent electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance. Compared with galvanized iron bars, brass bars do not corrode after long-term service, and their contact resistance remains stable without increasing over time.
The key functional value of the grounding copper bar in lightning protection systems is aligned with the "single-point grounding" principle: all equipment protective grounds converge at the same location, which prevents secondary damage to equipment caused by potential differences induced by multiple dispersed grounding points. During the instantaneous discharge of lightning current, a short-term high potential will form on the grounding copper bar. However, if the enclosures and signal grounds of all connected equipment are electrically equipotentially bonded to this copper bar, no hazardous potential difference will be generated between different pieces of equipment.
2.Stainless Steel Box Enclosure: An Inherent Equipotential Body
The 304 stainless steel box body is electrically conductive as an integrated structure. Once the box enclosure is reliably connected to the grounding copper bar, the entire box forms an equipotential body with a Faraday cage effect. Even if the external electromagnetic field changes drastically, the electromagnetic environment inside the box remains relatively stable. The box enclosure also provides a certain degree of shielding and attenuation for internal electromagnetic pulses. Meanwhile, the equipotentially bonded box body ensures that operating personnel will not suffer electric shock hazards [in the event of a system insulation fault].
For outdoor distribution boxes already put into operation, it is recommended that operation and maintenance personnel complete the following inspections before the arrival of the thunderstorm high-risk period:
1. Visual inspection of grounding connections:
Check whether all terminals on the grounding copper bar are securely fastened, whether the insulation layer of the grounding wire is intact, and whether the surface of the copper bar has severe oxidation or rust. If any looseness is detected, tighten it immediately; if any corrosion is found, replace the corresponding component immediately.
2. Grounding resistance measurement:
Use a specialized grounding resistance tester to measure the grounding resistance of the main grounding electrode of the distribution box. If the measured value exceeds 10 ohms, inspect the grounding electrode for corrosion, fracture, or check whether the surrounding soil is excessively dry. Add additional grounding electrodes or apply resistance reducing agent as needed.
3.SPD status inspection:
Most SPDs are equipped with a status indicator window, where green indicates normal operation and red indicates a fault requiring replacement. SPDs will gradually degrade after absorbing multiple surges. When the status window turns red, it indicates that the internal varistor has failed and must be replaced in a timely manner; otherwise, the lightning protection function will fail to operate normally.
A reliable lightning protection solution for outdoor distribution boxes originates from standardized structural-level design of the enclosure, encompassing the equipotential connection from the grounding copper bar to the stainless steel enclosure, as well as the pathway from the pre-installed grounding screws to the SPD mounting base. Ouyue Electric's stainless steel distribution boxes are equipped with a structured grounding system ex-factory, providing a standardized and reliable fundamental platform for lightning protection construction, daily operation, and maintenance for end users.
